Albert Haller Foundation Application

History of Haller Grant

Albert Haller passed away in 1992 creating the Albert Haller Foundation in his will for charitable and educational purposes to further the welfare of the citizens of Clallam County. Each year, the Foundation must distribute a portion of its value to 501(c)3 organizations and as scholarships to students.  A maximum grant amount is determined annually by the Haller Board.  The priority is to fund projects that provide food, housing, clothing, medical care, and other programs that may enhance and enrich the lives of those less fortunate in Clallam County. Programs to assist school children, hospice, and food banks are specifically identified as priorities.

Albert Haller Foundation Application cont...

The Haller Foundation is a private foundation with 5 appointed directors. The Haller board members recognized that they do not have adequate knowledge of human service needs in the County and the agencies that assist people with those needs. So, in 1994, an agreement was created between the Haller board and United Way of Clallam County.  United Way reviews the grant applications, and the United Way Funds Distribution Committee works in an advisory role to the Haller Foundation, providing recommendations for funding to the Haller Board of Directors. The Haller board makes the final decisions. United Way is uniquely suited for this task:

  1. One of our stated goals is “To be a constructive voice for human service needs in Clallam County.”
  2. We have an established Funds Distribution Committee which allocates funds, determined on an annual basis, to health and human service agencies across Clallam County.
  3. As requested, the Funds Distribution Committee advises other local governing boards on distribution of their Human Services Funds.

Recommendations are not considered or approved by the United Way board.  The Haller Board has the final authority in making all awards.  United Way does not receive or distribute funds – the Haller Board presents checks to recipient agencies at a ceremony in the fall of each year.

It is an honor for United Way to be associated with the Haller Foundation.  They look to us for expertise and value our advice.  We are helping to get thousands of dollars into our community every year to be used in the most efficient, effective ways to aid people in need.

United Way receives a fee to help cover staff time and materials.  United Way also applies for a Haller grant annually and has received many generous grants.  The Haller Foundation Board reviews United Way’s grant application separately, to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.  We clearly qualify under the guidelines and the Haller Board agrees that United Way is among the very worthy organizations that receive their funds.

Considerations for this Year

Requests typically exceed available funds, so partial funding is common.

General Tips

Based on funding decisions over the past several years, United Way’s Funds Distribution Committee came up with some general tips to help you along with the application process:

  • Avoid applying for funding in duplicated services (check and see if other agencies already offer the same programs) unless they are in different geographical areas. Explain why your proposal is unique.
  • Emphasize any collaborations with other agencies that make your impact and money go further. Include information on volunteers and hours needed to complete.
  • If your organization is awarded a grant, expect to send a representative to the grant award ceremony. (Date and time TBA, most likely late October)
  • Consider funding criteria and how your proposal fits in with the specifications in Albert Haller’s will.
  • Capital projects (critical need that is necessary for client services to be offered) will be considered, but are subject to the limits of this grant process involving United Way. Large scale capital projects requiring more than the maximum amount available through this grant process may be considered, but those funds must be applied for directly from the Albert Haller Foundation.
  • Read the application carefully to make sure you follow all directions. Please double check your application to make sure it is complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered for funding.
