Cold Hands, Warm Hearts
United Way of Clallam County (UWCC) took our December meeting out of the board room and into the community this month. UWCC staff, board and committee members joined for a donation sorting party on Tuesday, December 9, at the Port Angeles Food Bank, one of UWCC's newest Impact Partners. Dressed warmly against the December chill, participants sorted a full pallet of donated food items before touring the Food Bank's impressive facility.
It Takes All of Us
The Port Angeles Food Bank operates with more than 50 volunteers a month, the equivalent of 3 full-time employees! Volunteers support many aspects of the food bank's operations, including The Market, Mobile Market, warehouse, commercial kitchen, and various community outreach programs.*
We were greeted by the Port Angeles Food Bank’s Volunteer Coordinator, Hannah Seligmann, who told us about the history of the food bank and the important role it plays in coordinating food security efforts on the North Olympic Peninsula. Hannah then brought us inside the warehouse to learn the specifics of the work we would be doing that day, allowed us to break into teams, and we got to work!
Our group went through a pallet of nonperishable food items, labeled each clearly with the expiration date, sorted them into categories, and then transferred them into large boxes. These larger boxes in turn were labelled and put onto a different pallet, ready for other volunteers to use them to stocks shelves, or send them wherever in the county they're needed.
The time flew by and when we were done, we were all grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact on food security in our community in a hands-on way. We can't wait to come back!
