A Message from CEO Christy Smith

In the spirit of transparency, connection, and community leadership, I am continuing my monthly commitment to speak directly with you about the work happening across Clallam County, the partnerships moving us forward, and the challenges and opportunities we are navigating together. Each month, I will highlight initiatives that reflect our mission, introduce collaborations that are making a difference, and share hopeful steps forward for our community. My goal is to keep you informed, inspired, and connected to the impact you help make possible.

Mental Health Awareness Month

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I am excited to share my perspective on how combining community support with personal care, individuals and communities can work toward a future where mental well-being is prioritized, supported, and openly discussed.

Seeking Professional Support

Our Impact Partner, Peninsula Behavioral Health offers a wide range of services, including counseling, crisis intervention, and substance use treatment. Their work focuses on meeting people where they are, regardless of income or background, ensuring that support is available to all. By emphasizing compassionate, integrated care, they help individuals regain stability and improve quality of life.

Supporting Yourself

There are many things you can do on your own to support your mental health. Getting enough sleep, staying physically active, and eating balanced meals supports your mind and your body. Taking breaks from screens, spending time outdoors, and practicing mindfulness or deep breathing can reduce stress. Staying connected with friends and family can provide emotional support, and setting realistic goals can prevent feeling overwhelmed.

Supporting Others

It's also important to check in on your friends, family and co-workers to see how they are doing. Normalize talking about mental health and practice active listening that allows others to be heard, not ‘fixed’. Set healthy boundaries for yourself and accept ‘no’ when others set their own healthy boundary.

Ultimately, mental health awareness is not a one-time campaign but an ongoing commitment.

United Way of Clallam County supports mental health initiatives through funding, partnerships, and community programs. Our efforts address factors like housing, financial stability, and healthcare access—issues that strongly influence mental well-being. Support our work by making a donation now.
